July 28, 2009

The month of July is substance abuse awareness month and with that said, I would like to tell the story of one of my best friends whose life ended when she was tragically hit by a drunk driver.

On April 19, 2009, the life of Michaela Auroa Zickhur came to an end when her car collided with that of a drunk driver’s, throwing her through the windshield. She was pronounced dead at the scene and since that day, my life has been completely changed.

Michaela was innocent and full of life, she loved with all that she had. It is an honor me to have been her friend. She was sixteen years old. She always put the needs of others before herself and had a smile that could light up the whole world.

Not only am I blogging about alcohol and Michaela, but I’m also blogging about what she left behind- three simple words which have so much meaning: “Keep your heart.”

Life as we know it can sometimes be crazy, tragic, and hard. But through the craziness of life, we must “keep our heart”, meaning we must cling to what we believe in. After all, our heart holds the key to our morals, beliefs, and values.

So for all of you reading this, first I want to say: Don’t ever drink and drive and alcohol kills.

But, second, I want to say: “Keep your heart.”

Strive to be a Michaela.

Last but not least, Rest in peace Michaela. I love and miss you dearly.
