On January 20, 2009, the world witnessed the first African-American President get sworn into history. Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States and I was there. The sun was high, and the wind was cool. The crowds were enormous but my mood was unsettled. My hands were so cold that I had to buy warmers for my feet and hands. I was bundled with a scarf, tucked away in a borrowed fur coat and I was still cold. Yet, I was going to witness history.

My bus ride from Lancaster, Philadelphia to Washington, DC was a little over 2 hours. I slept most of the way. People on the bus were so excited that some could not rest or even shut their eyes for a minute. When I woke up it was still dark. Needless to say, it was 5 o’clock in the morning. The journey to history was an interesting one. I started out on a chartered bus and ended up on a shuttle bus. We were being transported from RFK Stadium to the Capitol Mall. This is right in the heart of DC!

After a 30 minute wait for the shuttle, we were on our way! When we reached Capitol Mall, there was a slew of people. All nationalities, all ages, all genders, just all types of people were there for one cause. I have never witnessed such a thing! NEVER! A group was distributing name tags that said, “Hello Fellow American, My name is ______. I am from ________________.” I filled my name tag out with speed. “Angelina, California”. I wanted everyone to know that I traveled from California to be with them and to support Barack!

The hours flew by and before I knew it the ceremony had begun. As I stood near the Washington Memorial, I settled in with my fellow Americans. People around me held the US flag, others held their children close, and many were in awe at this monumentous occasion! I was one of them. We watched the jumbo-tron as Barack took the stage. With Michelle by his side, using Abraham Lincoln’s bible, we stood there in silence to hear him speak!

Attending the Inauguration for Obama meant so much to me that words could not explain. For years, I have worked diligently to be supportive and a positive role model for my children. My schedule has changed with every semester and I have managed to continue forward with my collegiate goals. Seeing Obama being sworn in as the 44th President, reminded me that anything is truly possible. Regardless of your family background, financial status, your upbringing, or your mind set. If you have a goal or dream imbedded in your mind, you can accomplish it! With a little sacrifice and perseverance, any goal is within your reach!

I took more than a lot from attending the Inauguration! The most important thing I can share with anyone is this….. Never give up, Never quit, and do not let anyone get in the way of your dreams. Dreams can come true as long as you believe in them and yourself!
