Keynote Speakers
Brianna Karp
Brianna Karp was born in 1985 and was raised in Orange County, California. To outsiders Brianna’s life appeared normal, but at home it was anything but. Brianna endured constant mistreatment from her parents: molested by her father at the age of two and abused by her mother until a late teen. She got her first job at age ten, a legal work permit at age twelve, and supported her mother and younger sister by working multiple jobs from age twelve to eighteen, when she left home. With no safety net and unable to live with family and friends, Brianna eventually began living in a trailer at a Wal-Mart parking lot. While searching for permanent employment, Brianna decided to write about her homeless experiences and started the blog TheGirlsGuidetoHomelessness. As the popularity of her blog increased, her life took a downward spiral, and Brianna was soon faced with insurmountable challenges.
Today, Brianna is a Marketing Assistant for the South Coast Repertory and is seeking a permanent residence. She is also the co-founder of World Homeless Action Day, a spokesperson for the homeless, and a passionate advocate for the issues of homelessness. Brianna’s book was voted #1 Readers’ Prize in Elle magazine and more recently, one the Library Journals’ Best Books of 2011.
Brianna will be speaking at the Taking Action Conference Awards Dinner on Monday, April 16, 2012. For information about purchasing tickets to only the Awards Dinner, please contact Desiree Rose.
Jevon Wilkes
photo provided by Ventura County Star
Jevon Wilkes is a living testimony to the power of the human spirit, determination and grit. He shares a vision of a future filled with hope, service to mankind, a beacon of light to others.
Homeless at 14 years of age, yet determined to stay in school to get an education, the adversities of a difficult life helped to mold a future of great possibilities. Overcoming adversity has been a hallmark of this young man’s life. His example and incredible story touches the hearts of all those he encounters.
Jevon graduated from Miguel Contrares High School, Los Angles where he received a scholarship for leadership. Currently a senior at California State University, Channel Islands, he is pursuing a degree in Communications. The Association of Fundraising Professionals, Greater Los Angeles Chapter, bestowed its “Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award” on Mr. Wilkes. He has been the public face for Echoes of Hope and has done extensive public speaking. Jevon received the Martin Luther King, Jr. award for Outstanding Leadership from Upward Bound, Occidental College. He currently serves on the CCY board of directors and actively advocates for youth throughout California. Through the Bresee Foundation, he leads middle and high school students at Young Life Christian Camps. Jevon is also a popular guest on radio and television programs speaking about the need for programs to help and encourage youth success.
Jevon will kick-start day two of the Taking Action 2012 conference with his keynote address on Monday, April 16, 2012.
Brian Fowlie
At the age of 14, Brian Fowlie made a decision that would forever change him. What he chose to do next would change the lives of countless others as well. Fowlie, a troubled youth with a future looking rather grim, not only turned his life around, but dedicated himself to helping others do the same. His passion for helping some of California’s neediest and often most forgotten population – runaway and homeless youth – led him on a journey that would impact the lives of hundreds of teens in immeasurable ways. Through his donation drives, the workshops he facilitates, and his remarkable ability to connect with yout heading down dangerous paths, Fowlie continues to inspire all of those he meets by rekindling one’s belief in their ability to change and make a positive difference in their lives.
We are so excited to have Mr. Fowlie join us as the opening keynote speaker on Sunday April 15.
